K1 Flea Market: A Candid Review

K1 Flea Market: A Candid Review

Have you watched the Disney movie Zootopia? No? Go do that now. We will wait.

You will now be familiar with gazelle Shakira’s awesome song ''try everything''. And this is all you need to know about what K1 klubhouse is. It has tried most things and while most of the time trying to be everything that appeals to everyone can backfire on an establishment, the trying has worked very well for it.

K1 is bright colours, good vibes, and funkiness all the way. There are funny signs, and sarcastic signs, and traffic signs. There are a thousand umbrellas on the roof in the open walkway where you also sit and eat. There is a claw foot bath tub with African print pillows on it. K1 wants you to be happy. It is in their wifi password.

The contrast goes further than the aesthetics though. K1 klubhouse has a sub-zero cool retro feel but serves wholesome, stick to your ribs food. Bar food. Speaking of the bar, this is a place where you can get your beer and drink it sans shame because it feels like a local. You can get wine too, or a cocktail and soda for the tots. You can get a shot of rum and pour it into your madafu.

Enough about that, flea market is what? Well the flea market a la K1 is a place for some of Nairobi’s indie hand crafters, artisans, and budding business people come together every Sunday and make a cool place truly one of a kind. Body butters, hand-made jewelry, independently made herbal tea, organics etc etc. It is a naturalist’s wet dream. The market is part of the Sunday brunch experience it is not hawkish (hawker-esque?) or uncomfortable in the least. You will find something unique, made by someone who truly cares.

It is impossible to explain how it all works but it does. The K1 klubhouse is a wonder to behold and any self-respecting Nairobian should pick a Sunday soon to be as confused and elated as we were.
